Spend some time in the delightful Westport and Reefton. Take a short flight from Wellington to Westport or take the Trans alpine from Christchurch to Greymouth and grab a hire car to take the short drive up the coast to Westport (via the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki – voted top 10 coastal drive in the world by Lonely Planet Guide) or take the ferry from Wellington – Picton and drive down to Westport. Learn to pan for gold with some real West Coast characters the bearded miners while having morning tea. Visit Black's Point Museum to learn about the early settlers and pioneering spirit of the area. Check out the working battery stamper and the recently opened working gold mine in Reefton with great views of the mountain ranges and into the mine. Learn about the natural habitat in and around Reefton and Victoria Park – the largest conservation park in New Zealand. Take a trip through Coaltown museum, learn about the many different industries that this thriving area was formed on – breweries, the thriving wharf, coal, gold and timber. Relax and hear first hand accounts from residents of these parts on an original video from Denniston as they tell of how hard life was, of the amazing community spirit and the evolution of coal mining at Denniston and the many other local mines. Also view New Zealand largest collection of gem stones and a huge exhibition on the shipping trade. Take a walk through a simulation of what it would have been like in a coal mine and view the model of a coal wagon on the Denniston Incline. Take a walk along the Charming Creek walkway with the old railway and mining relics dotted all the way, not to mention the fantastic scenery, waterfall and river running by. Head out on a historical walking tour around Westport to hear about the coal and gold mining, visit the West Coast Brewery for a sample of a few local brews, see the first Carnegie library in New Zealand and the stunning clock tower and many other beautiful buildings.
