Punakaiki

Punakaiki is part of the Paparoa National Park, just 56km south of Westport on the Coast Road.

Punakaiki's pancake rocks and blowholes are the best-known examples of the spectacular cliffs and caves that typify the West's rugged coastline. The powerful Tasman Sea has carved these amazing rock and limestone sculptures over thousands of years. For you it is a short walk to see this feat of nature in progress. These fascinating limestone formations put on a spectacular spouting display on a high tide with a strong westerly swell. There are substantial cave networks to explore in the area as well as river and bush walks and canoe excursions.

For more information see the Punakaiki Tourism website.
