ReeftonReefton, a.k.a. 'The Town of Light' owes its origins to the discovery of rich quartz gold reefs in the 1800's. In August 1888, at the height of the gold rush, Reefton turned on electric street lighting before any other town in the Southern Hemisphere. Gold is part of the town's future as well as its past, after re-opening one of its Gold Mines in 2006. Set in the Victoria Conservation Park, famous for its Beech Forests, Reefton offers a range of outdoor activities including historic trails, fishing, tramping, mountain biking, 4WDing, and more. Reefton is a living, working heritage town with extensive historical sites and buildings, and there is always a cold beer on tap at the variety of pubs in town - what more could you ask for? For more information see the Reefton Tourism website.
